Uber and Lyft in coordination with other technology companies are trying to federally legitimize their exploitation of workers which will only work to re-enforce the wealth gap since most app-based drivers are minorities and members of the underclass. They have distorted the idea of independent contracting to their own benefit and have used exploitation of labor to avoid safety regulations and undercut pricing to seize market control and drive legitimate law-abiding companies out of business. It is a dangerous precedent that threatens all labor as other industries and corporations will soon attempt to use technology to subvert labor law, cut corners, and cut down on costs.
However, as a veteran rideshare driver who worked tirelessly against Prop 22, I can confidently say that we are not done fighting for our rights at a state and federal level. Drivers are learning ways to organize despite our lack of a water-cooler and common meeting area. Our fight is only beginning.
