Real Life Big Little Lies in Monterey
A shocking tale of coincidence in the life of a driver
Welcome to Monterey
Most men were lured into watching “Big Little Lies” by their wives or girlfriends. However, I discovered the addictive and dramatic HBO soap-opera (based upon a novel by Liane Moriarty) about middle-aged moms in Monterey at the suggestion of my passengers. If I was driving in San Francisco and my clients discovered I lived in Monterey, they would ask me if I had seen “Big Little Lies.” If I was rolling around at home in Monterey, locals wanted to know what I thought about the show’s characterization of life in our serene and idyllic little community…so I had to check it out.
It was compelling to watch a narrative set in the neighborhood where you lived, so I bit the hook pretty quick and was kept on the line by the seedy drama that unfolded with each episode. I was taken aback by the striking similarity between some of the show’s main characters and the soccer moms at my daughter’s games, or the funny familiarity to some of the other mothers who we would run into on our daily excursions to the library or My Museum, an interactive play zone for young children. In reality, women like these live in every upper-class community across the country, nevertheless the resemblance was uncanny to the moms who pushed strollers among us while we were on a stroll down…
