Crisis Redux
A reflection on politics to the tune of Pink Floyd
This story from my rideshare driving days took place a long time ago, back when cowboys and gangbangers were the only ones wearing bandanas. It is a story about ‘The Great Divide:’ the thing that ultimately separates us all and the thing that causes most of our wars and disputes. This fracture determines elections, ultimately dictating the course of our nation. It is a story that is timeless — occurring not that long ago in the grand scheme of things — although it certainly feels like it has been ages since then. My, how things sure have changed…and yet they have stayed the same.
I keep a notebook handy, wedged in between the driver’s seat and center console of my car for keeping track of stories and conversations with passengers. I am easily amused so these notebooks fill up fast. In an effort to provide a chronological frame of reference for my notes, I occasionally scribble a few words about current events at the top of a page. While driving in Monterey a little over three years ago, I made a few notes to myself about the news dominating the airwaves at that time, in addition to my reminders to myself about the conversations in my cab that evening. In hindsight, it is hard to believe that it was only three years ago, especially considering the new world order under Covid-19 and quarantine.
