As a lifelong Special Educator, I would not worry about him being in Special Ed as it is meant to always provide support and have a child in the Least Restrictive Environment (LRE) possible. As his parent and advocate, you can insist that school placement is appropriate. Special Education is really in place to hold schools accountable and make sure all students are treated fairly and given access to the tools that allow them to be successful in the LRE.

With all that said, keep in mind that your son is quite young and there was a time not long ago when no child would be receiving the sorts of interventions he is receiving at his age. Identification of special needs is an evolving science and cannot be completely accurate until a child has aged more and shown a wider spectrum of behaviors. I think it is within your right and perspective enough as a parent to give him more time to develop before exhausting his life with various specialists.

Also, exhaustion is a natural feeling for all parents and especially parents attuned to the needs of their individual children. A great read is a book called “The Mind Tree" by a young man with limited speech capability. For the first many years of his life, specialists from India to the UK told his mother that he was challenged, deficient, and unable of communication.

Once they discovered an interpretive software program that worked for him, he went on to publish several books of prose and poetry. Best of luck to you and your family on the road ahead…
